Do I need a lawyer?
Retaining a lawyer can be a big decision. You need to feel that you are making the right choice. If you are asking yourself whether you need to have an attorney represent you in an immigration matter, we can only suggest that you consult with an attorney to get a better sense of the complexity, or, for that matter, the simplicity, of your situation.
If you decide to retain a lawyer, you need to feel like you are making yet another right decision - choosing the right one. Having a friend, colleague or relative refer you to a professional he or she trusts can be very helpful. Finding a professional with whom you can feel comfortable without the benefits of such a referral, or wanting to make an independent choice, can be a challenge full of uncertainties.
This is precisely why we believe that your first consultation with an attorney should be an interactive experience that gives you the information you need before you can enter into the important attorney-client relationship with confidence. You should expect a meaningful discussion of your situation. If a particular course of action is recommended, it should be sufficiently explained to you so that you have an understanding of how that course of action is to be accomplished as well as what makes it the best advice or even a good idea.
What should I expect to happen at the initial consultation with this law office?
We strive to make initial consultations the kind of experience described above. We begin the consultation by learning about what you seek to accomplish. We ensure that this is a meeting where you feel that your questions are invited, thoughtfully considered, and answered frankly. When we advise you to pursue a certain immigration benefit, we explain the process as it applies to your case, the issues or challenges involved in your particular situation to the extent we are able to discover them at the initial consultation, the processing times and the fees. We attempt to answer any additional questions you may have in the remaining time.
I just have a simple question. Do I need a consultation?
Probably, yes. Your question may seem simple, but there may be (and often are) other, not-so-simple questions or issues that only a qualified attorney may be able to spot and bring to your attention. U.S. immigration laws are more often complex than simple; more often technical, than commonsense or intuitive. "Can I, as a U.S. citizen, get my spouse a green card?", for example, is by no means a simple question, as there are a number of legal considerations. One consideration is whether your spouse is "admissible" - a loaded legal term of art that requires knowing circumstances of entry to the U.S, prior entries and periods of stays in the U.S., any prior immigration history, any criminal history, etc. If the "simple question" is "How much does it cost...?", please understand that no quote for legal services may be provided without a consultation. We must determine exactly what is the service that needs to be provided, and that invariably requires that we carefully listen and ask and answer questions.
Is there a fee for the initial consultation?
At this time, there is no fee for the initial consultation. What do I need to bring to the initial consultation? Please use your best judgment. Generally, you should bring all of your immigration related documents. Should we require additional documentation to answer your questions fully, we may ask you to return with the documents and there would be no charge for the second consultation.
Who provides the consultations?
Attorney Arsen V. Baziyants.
